Meet Sonya Stevenson

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, TFBC’s First Lady Sonya Taylor Stevenson is a summa cum laude graduate of Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and an HISD Certification in School Business Management She has also completed coursework in education and business administration at the University of Houston.

Sonya’s career path has included work as an Internal Auditor and Financial Analyst for Exxon Chemical Americas.  She also worked as a Budget Analyst, Career and Technology Education Teacher and Business Manager for the Houston Independent School District.  She is grateful for each assignment as she recognizes it was all a part of a greater plan to place her as Executive Director of The Fort Bend Church.  Her experience and skills aided her in assisting her husband in establishing The Fort Bend Church in August of 2004 where they currently serve a congregation of over 4,300 members.

As Executive Director of The Fort Bend Church, Sonya is responsible for an array of essential duties and tasks that are key in the daily operations of The Fort Bend Church. Her role encompasses the administrative responsibility for all ministerial and non-ministerial activities of TFBC. Sonya is responsible for ensuring effectiveness and efficiency in the daily business operations of TFBC as well as focusing on improvement initiatives. She considers it both a privilege and an honor to serve as the Executive Director of The Fort Bend Church. 

Sonya is extremely passionate about youth and children.  It was that passion that led her to pioneer KALEIDOSCOPE, a 501 (c) 3 organization that supports educational and enrichment programs offered through The Fort Bend Church.  To date, through KALEIOSCOPE, over $30,000 has been raised to provide stipends and scholarships for high school seniors, trips to local college campuses, summer camp activities, “Back to School” events for youth and children and an Easter Bonanza, to name a few.  Funds are also used to purchase school supplies for at-risk students in the Fort Bend Independent School District. 

Beyond these efforts, Sonya is actively engaged in the community.  She regularly serves as a parent volunteer at Westbury Christian School and is a member of the Major Gifts Committee.  She serves as a mentor and volunteer in the Fort Bend Independent School District. Sonya is a community service partner with the Sisters Network, Incorporated, and regularly extends her support to breast cancer awareness initiatives. She is also a board member of the Baptist Standard Publishing Company. 

Sonya has received numerous honors and awards.  She has held offices, led committees and maintains memberships in Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated; The Links, Incorporated; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; Southern University Alumni Association and Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated. 

Sonya is the oldest of two girls.  She and Byron are high school sweethearts and the proud parents of two daughters, Claire Alexandra and Cydney Victoria.
